What is Endoscopy?

     Endoscopy is a diagnostic and treatment - therapy, consisting of a precise examination of the interior of the gastrointestinal tract.  Tests are performed under local or general anesthesia with an anesthesiologist.  Endoscopy is divided into the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract - gastroscopy (duodenoscopy) and lower intestinal tract - colonoscopy.

What is a gastroscopy?

     Gastroscopy allows for an accurate assessment of the upper gastrointestinal tract, the examination draws attention to the condition of the mucous membrane, the content of a liquid contained in its clearance and the mobility of the walls of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum.  Examination allows to diagnose:

  • inflammatory diseases: bacterial, viral and fungal infections,
  • changes caused by chemicals,
  • benign (polyps) and malignant disease,
  • staging a number of lesions and their respective classifications such as esophageal varices, erosive gastritis, and the source of bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract

How to prepare for the gastroscopy examination?

     The subject must be an empty stomach and must not be take drugs before the examination.  When performing endoscopy in the afternoon, the patient should remain fasting for at least 8 hours before the examination.  In patients at risk, decisions about the need and how to take the tests is the doctor in charge responsibility.

NOTE! After the examination for two hours, do not eat, drink or smoke. If  anesthetics or hypnotics were used, it is contraindicated driving, within several hours after the examination.

What is a colonoscopy?

     Colonoscopy is the endoscopic examination of the lower gastrointestinal tract consisting of viewing the inside of the colon.  Colonoscopy is usually performed when a doctor suspects a patient's lesions in the colon, the symptoms may include: bleeding from the lower gastrointestinal tract, abdominal pain, change in bowel habits. The examination is also recommended prophylactically in persons over 50 years of age.  In our hospital there is a possibility to make colonoscopy under general anesthesia.

How to prepare for a colonoscopy examination?

7 days before the examination:

  • Stop taking iron preparations,
  • patients taking anti-platelet agents - such as Aspirin, Acard, Ticlid, etc. - should stop taking them after consultation with the doctor who ordered the application of the above drugs
  • patients taking anticoagulants - Sintrom, Syncumar, Acenocumarol, Warfarin - you need to contact your doctor conducting anticoagulation treatment and change drugs into low molecular weight heparin.

During the four days preceding the examination:

  • Avoid eating raw fruits and vegetables, especially those that contain small seeds, such as: grapes, raspberries, currants, strawberries, kiwi, figs, tomatoes, pickles and their preparations
  • You should also avoid eating sugar, bread, grain and poppies.

On the day preceding the examination:

  • liquid diet in the morning - the last meal before the examination!
  • At approximately 4 pm, prepare 4 liters of a solution of FORTRANS by dissolving each bags per liter of still water (4l get a solution).  The prepared solution should be drunk within 4-6 hours, 1 cup every 15 minutes, according to the following diagram:
         4 pm – 250ml; 4:15 pm – 250ml; 4:30 pm – 250ml; 4:45 pm – 250ml
         5 pm – 250ml; 5:15 pm – 250ml; 5:30 pm – 250ml; 5:45 pm – 250ml
         6 pm – 250ml; 6:15 pm – 250ml; 6:30 pm – 250ml; 6:45 pm – 250ml
         7 pm – 250ml; 7:15 pm – 250ml; 7:30 pm – 250ml; 7:45 pm – 250ml
  • Apply BISACODYL suppository in the evening.

On the day of examination:

  • remain on an empty stomach,
  • apply BISACODYL suppository in the morning.
  • up to five hours before the examination, you can drink water and take drugs if they are permanently recommended by a doctor
  • BRING WITH YOU: proof of a personal referral.

How the examination can be performed?

  • private (fee - according to the price list)
  • on the basis of referrals from specialist clinic having a contract with the National Health Fund),

NOTE! Ill people should be able to communicate the registration office of their conditions while registering for the examination.  The examination cannot be performed without the written consent of the patient.
